In The Beginning

There is no depth in space,
nor in the tractless plane of spirit,
whose surface glares perfection--
serene, unpocked, but surface nonetheless.

And so he took a stone
   and cast it forth,
and with its weight as it fell,
   drew down the flat dimension
and carved a ground and valley where none had been.

And the weight of the stone in the heart of the ground
drew to its breast the weight of the sky,
and upon it walked the feet of creatures,
and their throats fretted the air.

And the stone in the pit of heaven,
its weight on the warp and the woof,
   mined from the empty height
   an untapped vein of deep.

   Speak, Creatures--
drum upon the heavy air with your tongues.
Call, Angels, through the height the stone has made.
Taste, and find the world his word has thrown.
Across the depths, reverberate his praise.
